Recovered! (Sort of)

Well, it happened! It was an absolutely fantastic year, filled with ridiculous amounts of fun. I have a few funny stories - MC Lars helped me spread a couple of bales of straw in tent camping on Thursday; on Friday, I got to hold The Cat Empire's VCR (named Fisher), I ate the Firemen's Chicken Barbeque about 17 times because it was so delicious, and so on. What I really want to hear now, though, are YOUR stories! Who were your favorite bands? Did you meet any new friends? Fall in love? We want to know! Send stories to me at megan@grassrootsfest.org, and I'll post them here (I reserve the right to edit them). Pictures are cool, too... show us what you've got!

Recently got back from my 4th Grassroots. Wonderful fest, beautiful countryside. 2 complaints:
1) ripoffs. Had my backpack stolen , have heard this is fairly common
2) My main interest is the zydeco dance. Too many people swarm the dance tent & don't respect dancers' space. How can we educate people to respect our space? Roped off "partner dancing" area?
Despite problems, I'll continue to attend this great event!

Well, it was my 9th Roots in 10 years (the 1 year I missed almost killed me), and as usual it was a phenomenal festival. It never fails to be a strange and beautiful experience that is addicting and impossible to explain to people that have never been. I love inviting people to Roots that have never been before. I also feel so lucky to have had the Festival near my home home town during the more impressionable years of my life during high school and college. It really helped shape my love of all different kinds of music, and i truly cirnge at the thought of not knowing the joy and importance of dancing and music. It takes a lot to keep me from going; I think that for every job I ever had in college and grad school (and even today), every one of my bosses had been told that I needed the Thr and Fri of the 3rd weekend in July off to go to an imaginary cousin's wedding.

Anyway, the musical highlights for me this year were Donna (of course), the Flying Clouds, JBB, and the Avett Bros. The new camping rules kind of annoyed me at first, but to be honest, by the end of the festival I was admitting to my self that it was really nice to not have some other random tent literally on top of mine, with the ever-present risk of someone pissing on mine always lingering in the air.

In response to the previous poster, I have to say that after 9 Grassroots with many friends and family, I have never had anything of mine stolen or known someone who had something stolen, but I do believe that with that many people it probably happens more than I think.

Anyway, keep on keepin' on GR inc.; I love ya.

PS: 1 small request from an old-schooler from way back in the day: more blues!

Heya! I know this is insanely late but I think its an important post for me. I'd been trying to set up some kind of Grassroots meeting place (online) for a few years, only to fail miserably multiple times (I even handed out free art one year with a URL!).
Anywho. This is always the question I wanted people to answer. I wanted to collect "best grassroots moments" (we all have them) in one place to look back on and fill us up during the cold winters.
I hope you ask this question again this year, and I'll make sure at least for my part that all of my friends come here to answer it.

I always have a lot of favorites. One of them was the discovery (a bit late) of The Cat Empire. I came in halfway through the show incredibly drunk, but not so drunk I didn't realize how amazing they were. We were dancing like mad people, and Harry started to do that crazy scat vocalization thing he does and I just thought it was so damned sexy.
Another was hearing Kevin Kinsella do old JBB tracks and having his daughter come on stage to sing.
Probably the best of moments was seeing people dance in the mud to that music.

I'm so glad this blog exists!!
