Camping Information - If You're Camping, Please Read!

If you've got your onsite vehicle and camping passes all ready to go, you're probably starting to wonder what the deal is with pre-festival parking on Rabbit Run Road. Well, we've got a definitive answer: the road will open up for parking on Tuesday, July 14 at 3:00 pm. Regular parking rules apply - all four tires off the pavement, watch for signs, and PLEASE respect the neighbors. This is all the same as last year, no changes.

Another camping note: if you were planning on camping at the camping area owned and operated by the Falls Tavern (our next-door neighbors North of the Fairgrounds on Route 96), you'll need to make other plans. This area will not be a campground this year, it will only be a parking area. Again, this change only affects the area owned and operated by the Falls Tavern, NOT any of our onsite camping.

That's all the news I've got for now! Let me know if you have questions!

you read my mind...I was just going to ask about pre-fest Rabbit road

Is the camping from the entrance of Rabbit Run the same as the Falls Tavern camping? Is that land all owned by the same folks?

MeganRomer said...

I don't believe that camping is owned by the Falls Tavern. However, the fact that the Town of Ulysses (who has jurisdiction over that area) shut down the Falls Tavern's camping makes me think that they'll be putting the kibosh on the other neighbors' ad hoc campgrounds as well. But maybe not - at any rate, I definitely wouldn't count on it and would keep offsite camping or one of the local state parks.

if i am bringing the extra tent for my vehicle camping site, will i be able to walk it in the front gate at noon thursday, or are you allowing walk-ins at the back (rabbit run) gate - and at what time will the back gate open? - thanks!

MeganRomer said...

NO ONE can walk in solo through EITHER gate with an Extra Vehicle Tent pass. That tent MUST come in with the vehicle it is accompanying. They're sold as an extension, and not a solo situation, for that reason - it's how we keep track of things for the Health Department, and it's a rule that I'm afraid we just can't bend.

I have not been to the festival in about 15 years. I am really excited, but I am a little nervous about getting a decent camp site. I have a vehicle camping pass. I can't get there until Thursday morning. Will I still be able to get a decent site (not close to the stage)?

Krys said...

Oh, my, Megan-- you are getting me a bit nervous. I'm a Ulysses resident with LOTS of land (24 acres), and we often have friends camp here during the festival.... as do our neighbors. What kind of nonsense does Doug Austic have planned, and is there anywhere to find out what we are allowed to do and not get hassled?

MeganRomer said...

Jason - you should be fine. The spots close to the stage are usually the most desirable ones (as far as I can tell), so if you're looking for the opposite of that, you should be golden.

Krys - I don't know this for sure, but I'm pretty sure that if you're not selling your yard for camping, the situation is not the same... last I heard, it wasn't against the law to have friends visiting from out of town. But, hey. You know how things can be around here. You might want to give a call directly to the town and find out the situation with them... I imagine that you're fine, but definitely can't say for sure.

You said the pre-festival parking was the same as last year, however I recall last year there was no parking allowed until Wed. Is my recollection wrong? I just want to verify that the road will open on Tuesday at 3:00. We are coming from some distance and want to be sure.

MeganRomer said...

Last year, it was Tuesday at 3:00pm also, so nothing has changed.

Can vehicle passes be transferred from one vehicle to another as long as only one is on site at any time? I want to wait in line & bring my gear in with my pickup, but come on later days in my smaller car. Is there a problem with that?

MeganRomer said...

No, the vehicle that you enter with is stickered, and there's no way to transfer the sticker. You need to enter with whichever vehicle you're planning on spending the weekend with.

is the camp ground in that backyard next door to the vehicle camping area still going to be open it was nice there

kyle said...

I have vehicle pass-we have a couple little league games to attend over weekend. As usual we will leave car out on rabbit run road--can I walk in on thursday or do I need to stow away in someones car or hang on bumper to get in?

MeganRomer said...

@Anonymous - we have no idea! That camping is separate from us.

@Kyle - you do know that you're allowed to drive your car in and out of vehicle camping during daylight hours, right? At any rate, you can schlep in if you MUST, but you have to stay in order of the line - no budging just because you don't have your car. Also, be very careful - it's really not a pedestrian-safe zone once the "cattle rush" begins.

megan, thanks for all the info! any final word yet on what time rabbit run gate will open on thursday (noon, or before?), and what time will pedestrians be allowed to walk the rabbit run gate? - thanks! - cosca

I have a friend who purchased an on site tent ticket but wont be able to make it to grassroots until thursday night, could I pick up her tent ticket and set up a tent for her? Thanks!

MeganRomer said...

@Juliet You need to contact the office in advance of the festival in order to change the name on the pass so you can pick it up. Email us at info@grassrootsfest.org or call at 607-387-5098

Team - if you have serious questions and not just general curious queries, the blog is NOT the best place to ask those questions. Contact the office instead! I just can't make a promise that I'll be lurking here answering all of your questions for the next few days. If that sounded grumpy, I didn't mean to... I just want to make sure your important questions get answered and not lost in the ether! Word? Word!

I think you should be more up-front about prospects for getting a decent tent site for people who can't show up until Thursday.

Two years ago, we got the the road at 7:30 Thursday morning. We were at the end of a very long line. By the time we got in the gate, there were virtually no spots left. We ended up at the bottom of a hill, and got flooded out Friday night.

I love Grassroots - this will be our 10th year. But you need to be honest with people about their camping prospects.

p.s. we're staying at a cheap hotel in Ithaca this year.

MeganRomer said...

We have cut down on the total number of spaces sold in the last couple of years, but we've done significant amounts of math to come up with the numbers we have. Some people prefer the sites closer to the stages, some prefer them further away... there's no "good" or "better" spot, and there are enough spaces for everyone... it just depends on what you think a good spot is.

Can we have grills onsite for cooking and such?

I think it was 2006 Grassroots- the year of the rain and mud!- we were camping offsite too, and we didn't get to Tburg til Thursday evening or Friday morning- can't really remember- so we didn't get a GREAT spot, had to camp down the hill aways, where it flooded and we were forced to move UP-FIELD a bit.

It's def. no fun being flooded out, but you make the best of it and do what you can. The last 2 years we also stayed at offsite and yes, it rained (as it does every year) and yes, it was muddy, isn't that sort of the fun of it? By no means is it fun at all to wake up to a foot of water in your tent- we found a great spot just as you go into offsite camping area, across from the second set of porter-john's right at the top of the little hill there. We're camping onsite this year- so that spot is free- ENJOY!

Megan,
In 06 we were sent thru town by traffic control and lined up on a back road that didn't move until very late afternoon. It made a mess for everyone already in and set up.We have our tickets and are bringing an RV, any advise as to the best road in and place to line up very early Thursday morn?

Thanks Megan
"Kyle - you do know that you're allowed to drive your car in and out of vehicle camping during daylight hours, right"
for 12 yrs we have done this- we parked on the race track(Rabbit run when race track is full) and come and go as we please- Has this changed?
seems like less cars in camping area more room.

MeganRomer said...

@LostOldMan - I'm afraid I'm totally unfamiliar with the situation you're describing, but Rabbit Run Road is the road to line up on.

@Kyle - nope, as far as that goes, nothing has changed. We certainly don't mind if you prefer to keep your car on Rabbit Run, but as far as actually getting into the festival, maybe it would just be easiest to get in line with your car and getting the sticker on there, and then you have the option either way, y'know?

I'm only going down to the festival for thursday night and don't want to pay 75$ for a campsite. Any suggestions on where to camp?
